How Long Does Skincare Last? Storage, Shelf Life & PAO Explained
· East West Supply Co.

The 3-rule shelf life cheat sheet
Check the PAO symbol (jar with number + M). Store cool and dark. When a product changes color, smell, or texture, toss it. Most Cocoon products have 12M PAO — one year from opening. Sunscreens and vitamin C serums lose potency faster than plain moisturizers, so treat those as 6-month items even if the PAO says 12.
Lifespan by Product Type
How long each thing actually lasts after opening
Serums (6–12 months)
Vitamin C serums: 3–6 months tops. L-ascorbic acid oxidizes rapidly. Stabilized forms (MAP, SAP) last longer. Turmeric, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid serums: 12 months.
Cleansers & toners (12 months)
Water-based and well preserved. The main risk is contamination from water ingress — keep cap closed, avoid letting it sit in the shower long-term.
Moisturizers (12 months)
Pump bottles last the full 12 months reliably. Jars (scoop products) are slightly shorter because your finger introduces microbes. Use a spatula to extend.
Sunscreen (12M unopened)
Treat sunscreen as a 6-month item after opening even if PAO says longer. UV filters degrade. Replace each summer.
The Best Storage Spots in Your Home
The worst spot: the bathroom. Humidity, temperature swings from hot showers, and direct light all accelerate product breakdown. The sunny windowsill is even worse. Under-sink is better.
Best spot: a bedroom or closet drawer. Consistent cool temperature, darkness, and low humidity. A skincare fridge at 10–12°C is ideal for vitamin C, retinol, and any heat-sensitive active.
When a product turns yellow (vitamin C), separates, smells different, or develops mold spots around the seal, toss it. Active compounds have already broken down and may irritate skin.
