Dak Lak Coffee in Skincare: Why Vietnamese Robusta Wins

· East West Supply Co.

Why Vietnamese coffee works harder

Dak Lak Robusta contains nearly 2x the caffeine of Arabica — 2.2–2.7% vs 1.2–1.5% by weight. More caffeine per gram means more vasoconstriction for puffiness, more antioxidant potency for UV protection, and more chlorogenic acid (anti-inflammatory) per application.

What Caffeine Actually Does to Skin

Applied topically, caffeine is a vasoconstrictor — it tightens blood vessels in the skin. This reduces visible redness, shrinks under-eye puffiness (especially in the morning), and creates a short-term “tightening” effect that makes skin look firmer for a few hours.

Long-term, caffeine’s antioxidant profile — mostly chlorogenic acids — protects skin cells from UV-induced oxidative stress. Studies published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology show topical chlorogenic acid reduces UVB-induced inflammation and pigmentation.

For body care, the combination of physical exfoliation (coffee grounds) and caffeine absorption improves skin texture and temporarily reduces the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks. The effect is cosmetic, not permanent, but measurable after consistent use.

Robusta vs Arabica for Skincare

Why the coffee type on the label matters

Caffeine concentration

Robusta: 2.2–2.7%. Arabica: 1.2–1.5%. For topical cosmetic effect, higher caffeine = faster, more visible results per application.

Chlorogenic acid

Robusta contains roughly 7–10% chlorogenic acid by weight (vs 5–8% in Arabica). This is the main antioxidant responsible for anti-inflammatory and UV-protective effects.

Grind texture

Robusta beans are harder and produce finer, more even grounds for scrub applications. The particles exfoliate without the irregular edges that cause microtears.

Scent profile

Dak Lak Robusta has an earthy, chocolatey aroma that translates well into body care products — less sharp than Arabica, more grounding. The scent lingers gently after rinsing.

Cocoon’s Dak Lak Coffee Lineup

The Cocoon Coffee Body Scrub uses medium-fine Robusta grounds for 2x-per-week body exfoliation. The Face Polish uses ultra-fine grounds suitable for facial use. The Lip Scrub combines the grounds with shea butter for a lip-friendly exfoliant.

The Coffee Body Butter takes a different approach — coffee seed oil extract (no grounds) in a shea butter base for morning firming and afternoon antioxidant protection. Absorbs quickly, leaves no greasy film.

All products source from Dak Lak province and are certified vegan + cruelty-free. The coffee used is specifically grown for cosmetics — not repurposed spent grounds from coffee shops.
