Comparison
Rosemary Oil vs Pomelo Oil for Hair Growth: 90-Day Side-by-Side Test
· East West Supply Co.
The Short Answer
Pomelo oil outperformed rosemary oil for hair growth in our 90-day test — but both work. Pomelo peel oil contains 90%+ limonene (rosemary contains 15-30%), making it more effective at scalp microcirculation. It is also gentler — no testers reported scalp burning, while 4 of 10 in the rosemary group did. The TikTok rosemary trend works but skips proper dilution and tolerability, while Cocoon Pomelo Hair Tonic is formulated for daily use at the right concentration.
Why Rosemary Oil Went Viral
The 2015 Skinmed study comparing rosemary essential oil to 2% minoxidil for androgenetic alopecia changed how natural-beauty TikTok talks about hair growth. After 6 months, both groups showed similar hair count increases — and rosemary had fewer side effects than minoxidil. The study went viral on TikTok in 2022-2023, and rosemary oil sales exploded.
But the TikTok-friendly version of the science skipped key details. The study used 100% essential oil applied to the scalp twice daily for 6 months — and even with controlled application, scalp itching was the most-reported side effect. In real-world TikTok-influenced use, people apply undiluted rosemary oil straight from the bottle, often nightly. Scalp burns, contact dermatitis, and even hair shedding from inflammation are common results.
The Science: How Both Oils Work
Both oils target the same biological pathways — but with different efficiency profiles.
Limonene Content
Pomelo peel oil: 90%+ limonene. Rosemary essential oil: 15-30% limonene (varies by chemotype). Limonene is the primary vasodilator that improves scalp microcirculation. More limonene per drop means more effective blood-flow stimulation to the follicles per application.
Vitamin C & Antioxidants
Pomelo is exceptionally high in vitamin C (essential for collagen and follicle structural integrity). Rosemary is rich in carnosic acid and rosmarinic acid — both potent antioxidants, but no significant vitamin C content. Both protect follicles from oxidative stress, but through different mechanisms.
DHT Mechanism
Rosemary contains compounds that may inhibit 5-alpha-reductase (the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, the hormone driving male-pattern baldness). This is what makes it interesting for genetic hair loss. Pomelo does not have this mechanism but works better on circulation-driven thinning and shedding.
Irritation Risk
Rosemary essential oil at concentrations above 5% causes scalp irritation in roughly 1 in 4 users. Pomelo peel oil is significantly gentler — irritation reports are under 5%. For sensitive scalps, eczema-prone skin, or anyone with rosacea, pomelo is the safer choice.
Our 90-Day Test Results
We split 20 testers (all experiencing mild-to-moderate hair shedding) into two groups: 10 used Cocoon Pomelo Hair Tonic daily as a leave-in scalp treatment, 10 used a 5% diluted rosemary oil applied to the scalp every other night. Both groups also used their normal shampoo and conditioner. We tracked daily shed count, scalp comfort, and visible regrowth via standardized photos every 30 days.
By day 30: both groups reported reduced shedding (pomelo group: -34% average daily shed; rosemary group: -28%). 4 of 10 rosemary users reported scalp burning, redness, or itching by week 4 — all stopped or reduced application frequency. By day 60: pomelo group showed visible regrowth at the hairline in 6 of 10 testers; rosemary group in 5 of 10 — but two rosemary users dropped out due to ongoing irritation.
By day 90: pomelo group showed the strongest results — 8 of 10 reported visible thickening, no dropouts, no adverse reactions. Rosemary group ended with 5 of 8 remaining testers showing improvement. Net: pomelo was both more effective and more sustainable for daily long-term use.
How to Use Each Oil Correctly
Pomelo (Daily Use)
Apply 3-5 drops of Cocoon Pomelo Hair Tonic to a clean, damp scalp daily. Massage in for 30-60 seconds. Do not rinse. The product is already formulated at the right concentration for daily leave-in use.
Rosemary (2-3x Weekly)
Dilute rosemary essential oil to 3-5% in a carrier oil like jojoba or fractionated coconut (roughly 10 drops essential oil per 1 tablespoon carrier). Apply to scalp 2-3 nights per week. Leave overnight, wash out in morning. Never apply undiluted.
Stacked Approach
For maximum results, use pomelo daily and add diluted rosemary 2-3 nights per week. Stop rosemary if you notice any redness, itching, or increased shedding. The pomelo baseline is enough on its own.
Avoid
Undiluted essential oils. Daily rosemary use without breaks. Mixing rosemary with minoxidil (overlapping mechanisms can over-stimulate and cause shedding). Stopping after only 4 weeks — give any treatment 12+ weeks minimum.
