Pregnancy-Safe Skincare: What's OK, What to Avoid (V-Beauty)
· East West Supply Co.

Pregnancy skincare in two rules
Pause retinol, high-percentage salicylic acid, and hydroquinone. Keep niacinamide, botanical antioxidants, mineral sunscreen, and any gentle hydrating routine. This article is a starting framework — always run product choices past your OB-GYN. Every pregnancy has nuance.
What to Pause (and Why)
Actives to set aside for 9 months
Retinol and retinoids
All forms — tretinoin, adapalene, retinyl palmitate, even bakuchiol (retinol-like). Oral retinoids cause birth defects; topical is debated but obstetric consensus is to pause.
High-% salicylic acid
Cleansers at under 2% are generally fine (low exposure). Leave-on peels above 2% or any dose of oral salicylates should be avoided.
Hydroquinone
High systemic absorption. Avoid entirely. For melasma, use turmeric, niacinamide, and vitamin C instead.
High-dose essential oils
Small amounts in formulated products are fine. Avoid applying neat essential oils (especially rosemary, clary sage, basil) during the first trimester.
What’s Safe and Effective
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) for melasma, oil control, and barrier repair — safe and actively useful throughout pregnancy.
Hyaluronic acid for hydration and plumping. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid or MAP) at 10–15% for brightening and antioxidant protection. Vitamin E as a gentle antioxidant.
Botanical actives from Cocoon Vietnam products — turmeric (curcumin), winter melon, lotus, rose, centella asiatica, pomelo — are all well tolerated during pregnancy when used in formulated concentrations.
Pregnancy-Friendly Vietnamese Skincare
Botanical actives that work without retinol or strong acids.
