Best Vegan Lip Balm 2026: 8 Picks We Tested (Burt’s Bees Loses)

· East West Supply Co.

The Short Answer

Cocoon Ben Tre Coconut Lip Balm ($14) won our 30-day test for hydration duration and value. Lasted 8x longer per application than Burt’s Bees Vegan and outperformed Hurraw on both hydration and texture. For tinted, Glossier Balm Dotcom was the best Western pick but loses on ingredient quality. Eos has improved but still cracks if used in cold or windy weather.

Why "Vegan Lip Balm" Is Harder Than It Sounds

Most traditional lip balms rely on beeswax as the barrier-forming ingredient. Beeswax is what makes Burt’s Bees Original last so long — and what makes it not vegan. Removing beeswax means finding a plant-based alternative that creates a similar protective film. The two best options are candelilla wax (from a Mexican shrub) and carnauba wax (from a Brazilian palm). Done right, both perform as well as beeswax. Done cheaply, they crumble, crack, or feel waxy.

The second challenge is the carrier oil. Coconut oil is the gold standard for lips because lauric acid forms a long-lasting barrier with antimicrobial properties. But not all coconut oil is equal — virgin cold-pressed from fresh coconuts has dramatically higher lauric content than refined or fractionated versions. Vietnamese Ben Tre coconuts have some of the highest lauric content of any commercial coconut variety, which is why Cocoon’s formulation outperforms balms using imported industrial coconut oil.

Our 8 Tested Picks (Ranked)

Scored on hydration duration, ingredient quality, texture, value, and packaging.

1. Cocoon Ben Tre Coconut Lip Balm — $14

Cold-pressed Vietnamese coconut + candelilla wax + Vietnamese rice bran oil. Lasted 6-8 hours per application. Slight coconut scent (natural, not perfumed). No flavor. Plant-derived stick format. Winner.

2. Hurraw Original — $4.79

Best budget pick. Solid plant-based formula with avocado oil, sunflower oil, and candelilla. Lasted 4-5 hours per application. Strong selection of natural flavor variants. Best for daily on-the-go use.

3. Glossier Balm Dotcom — $16

Tinted, vegan, and the most-pictured lip balm of the decade. Petroleum base lasts well but is not the cleanest ingredient. Best for the aesthetic, decent for hydration. Best for: people who care about tube design and tint.

4. Eos Vegan — $4.99

Iconic egg-shape packaging. Better than the original formula but still tends to crack in cold weather. Decent hydration for the price. Best for: casual indoor daily use.

5. Tower 28 LipSoftie — $20

Buttery vegan formula with shea butter and squalane. Beautiful tint range. But $20 is high for the size you get. Best for: tint enthusiasts who want a non-petroleum option.

6. Pacifica Coconut Kiss — $5

Budget coconut option. Lighter formulation than Cocoon, lasts 2-3 hours per application. Strong synthetic coconut fragrance some testers disliked. Best for: budget shoppers who like coconut.

7. Burt’s Bees Vegan — $4

The vegan version of the cult-classic. Removed beeswax, replaced with candelilla — but the formulation is now noticeably less effective than the original. Lasts 1-2 hours per application. Skip in favor of Hurraw at similar price.

8. Carmex Vegan — $4

Tingly menthol-based formula. Works as a temporary fix for chapped lips but the menthol can be drying long-term. Best for: occasional use, not daily protection.

How to Pick the Right Lip Balm

For long-lasting daily protection: Cocoon Ben Tre Coconut Lip Balm. For budget daily use: Hurraw. For tinted lip color: Glossier Balm Dotcom or Tower 28. Avoid: anything with petroleum if you want clean ingredients, and anything menthol-based for daily use (the tingling is a sign the menthol is irritating, not healing).

A note on "100% natural" claims: every lip balm needs a preservation system, especially if it contains water or fruit-based ingredients. Cocoon uses tocopherol (vitamin E) as a natural antioxidant preservative. Brands that claim zero preservatives in a water-containing balm are either lying or selling a product with a 4-month shelf life. Always check the expiration date.
